Swindell sweeps All Stars at Volusia

BARBERVILLE, FL (2-10-11) By Brian Liskai – The competition had better watch out – Sammy Swindell is having fun racing…and winning.

The Germantown, Tenn. driver completed the sweep of the O'Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions Sprints Thursday, Feb. 10 at Volusia Speedway Park during the second night of the 40th Annual DIRTcar Nationals by the University of Northwestern Ohio. Swindell, who took the All Star win the previous night, reeled in Stevie Smith on lap 20 on the ultra-fast half mile track and went on to his 23rd career series win in his hall of fame career.

"Once again, we just had an awesome car," said Swindell beside his Big Game Tree Stands backed car. "The track is completely different than it was last night and we were just able to keep up with the adjustments."

The night got off to a fast start. During time trials, Paul McMahan and his #83 Roth/Kahne KPC shattered the track record by turning a lap in 12.569 seconds at 143.209 mph. With a tacky track, 27 of the 37 cars ended up qualifying under the previous record of 12.948 seconds which was set in 2007.

Rain just prior to the night’s racing made for a fast and challenging racing surface. As the night wore on, the high speeds taxed driver skills.

"That was probably the most physically demanding race I have ever been in," said worn out Cody Darrah after his third-place run.

Darrah, who pilots the #91 Great Clips Kasey Kahne Racing machine, won the dash and started from the pole in the A-main. The 21-year-old Darrah traded the lead with Smith right at the start before Smith moved in front and paced the field for much of the 30-lap race. With 10 laps to go, Swindell once again closed in and took the lead.

"It just goes to show you how good of a driver Sammy is," said Smith, of Broken Arrow, Okla. "He adapted pretty well and we had a great battle between us."

Dale Blaney and Kraig Kinser rounded the Top 5 to wrap up the second and final night of competition for the 28th Annual Winter Nationals for the All Stars.

In terms of the bigger picture, two-time and defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer , who opened the Winter Nationals with his sixth straight All Star win at Ocala Speedway last week, failed to make the night’s A-main, dropping him to 7th in the Eastern Region point standings. Also failing to make the A-main was 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions will now head north where the Ohio Region of the series will kick off Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 with the traditional HD Supply Spring Nationals at Attica Raceway Park.
