Solwold Strikes for ASCS Northwest Win at Grays Harbor!

Jason Solwold and crew enjoy ASCS Northwest victory lane after topping Saturday night's main event at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA. (Stacy Verrall photo)

ASCS Northwest Media, ELMA, Wash. (May 28, 2011) – Speeds of 108-125 mph were clocked after the crew at Grays Harbor Raceway reworked the 3/8-mile clay oval after a three hour rain delay for the first of two ASCS Northwest nights in Elma.

And consistently turning the quickest of those laps was defending ASCS Northwest champion Jason Solwold in the Shark-powered Xtreme Oilfield Technology/Scott Safety/Northern Provincial Pipelines No. 39c Maxim, as he scored a commanding win in the 30-lapper by racing to the checkered flag virtually unchallenged.

With action throughout the field in his wake, Solwold posted his first series win of the year and sixth career in ASCS Northwest competition.

Fifteen-year-old Trey Stark jumped from his fourth staring position into second after making an impressive pass on lap six past Enumclaw’s Henry Van Dam.  Former ASCS Champion Roger Crockett pushed his way from 13th to third, tucking another Travis Rutz Hard Charger Award under his belt. Lucas Oil ASCS National driver Seth Bergman jumped to fourth with Van Dam rounding out the top five.

Currently second in points with the Lucas Oil ASCS National series, Johnny Herrera was looking strong in third place till about lap 26 when his car mysteriously slowed to a stop on the front stretch.

Last week’s winner at Grays Harbor Raceway’s weekly show, Garen Linder finished sixth with Randy VanAagten moving up two places to seventh. Starting the feature race in the last position, Jared Peterson went home with a respectable eighth place finish with Mitch Olson and Jason Cocking wrapping up the top ten.

ASCS SOD Saturated Again at Waynesfield

WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (May 28, 2011) – Just as a sturdy field of 42 competitors completed hot laps, rain forced the cancellation of Saturday night’s Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by ARP event at Waynesfield Raceway Park.

After two rainouts in as many nights, the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt will try to finish out the Memorial Day weekend on a successful note with Sunday’s card atop the high-banked Eldora Speedway dirt oval near Rossburg, OH.

Dover Scores ASCS Sooner Win in Steve King Opener

Eventual American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner winner Jack Dover (53) battles with Jason Martin in Saturday's opening portion of the Third Annual Steve King Memorial at The Great American Dirt Track at Jetmore, KS.  (Rob Kocak photo)

Inside Line Promotions, JETMORE, Kan. (May 28, 2011) – It was a bit confusing and a roller-coaster finish to Saturday night for Jack Dover.  The 21-year-old thought inadvertent radio chatter cost him Night 1 of the 3rd annual Steve King Memorial presented by The Oil Medics at The Great American Dirt Track in Jetmore, Kan.

However, Derek Drown, who crossed the finish line first, was disqualified for a nose wing violation. That handed the opener of the two-day American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region/NCRA event to Dover.

“It’s not the way I wanted to win, but I’ll take it,” he said with a big grin. “We showed out there that we were the fastest car over the race.”

Dover, who started seventh, worked his way into second place within the first handful of laps. Meanwhile, Drown took the lead from polesitter Jason Martin as Dover climbed into the top three.

The duo had a spirited battle for several laps before Dover eventually got positioning on the bottom of the track entering turn one a third of the way through the 30-lap race. The drivers had a drag race down the backstretch before Dover cleared him entering turn three and gradually created a sizable lead.

A pair of cautions in the final 10 laps allowed Drown to close the gap, but it wasn’t until Dover said he heard a voice over the RACEceiver that there was a challenge for the top spot.

“I thought he said something so I slowed down,” Dover said. “I was clear out of the throttle.”

Drown powered into the lead on the backstretch and held on the final three circuits for the apparent win. However, post-race inspection found his nose wing was too far forward and he was disqualified.

“It’s unreal,” Drown said. “It’s one of them deals.”

Officially, Mike Peters finished second. He was also the runner-up to Dover in the fifth and final heat race.

“There was a little bit of everything,” Peters said of the main event. “Good close racing and some excitement.”

C.J. Johnson placed third, Jeremy Campbell was fourth and Danny Wood rounded out the top five.

Brian Brown was sixth, followed by Joe Wood Jr., Garry Lee Maier, Justyn Cox and Miranda Arnold, respectively. Arnold drove from 10th to finish fourth in her B Main and then rallied from last place – 22nd – to record the top 10.

Bruce Jr. and Colton Treharn each claimed a B Main victory.

In an unusual moment, current ASCS Sooner Region points leader Matt Covington was leading the second B Main when his right front tire came off the car in turn two. Covington, whose tire flew off the track, raced another lap and a half in the lead before his car failed to turn and went straight into the wall in turn four.

Brady Bacon, Drown, Brown, Campbell and Dover topped the heat races.

Racing resumes on Sunday with the finale of the 3rd annual Steve King Memorial presented by The Oil Medics. The front gate opens at 5:30 p.m. with racing set for 7:30 p.m.

Gary Wright snared his second Smiley's Racing Products ASCS Gulf South win in as many nights by wiring the field in Saturday night's 25-lap feature event at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX.  (ASCS Gulf South photo)

Lonnie Wheatley, WILLIS, Texas (May 28, 2011) – A return to his familiar No. 9 Maxim was apparently just the tonic that Gary Wright needed, as “The Texan” reeled off another win in Saturday night’s 25-lap Smiley’s Racing Products ASCS Gulf South main event at the Gator Motorplex.

It was Wright’s second win of the weekend in the three-race ASCS Gulf South “Memorial Day Classic” and his fifth in just seven starts aboard his own entry thus far in 2011 after just three Regional wins over the course of the entire 2010 season.

With his second $2,000 triumph in as many nights, Wright has already clinched a $500 bonus for the weekend.  Another $2,000 triumph in Sunday’s card at Lufkin’s Speedarama Raceway would net Wright $7,000 for the weekend including a $1,000 bonus for a weekend sweep.

In Saturday’s feature, Wright redrew the pole position after a runner-up finish in his heat race and wired the field for his first ASCS win atop Gator Motorplex clay.

Wright was chased to the line by third-starter Jason Johnson, while Friday night absentee Kevin Ramey dropped in to claim a podium finish by taking the show position.  Aaron Reutzel was fourth, with Channin Tankersley rounding out the top five.

Lasoski Takes ASCS Midwest Loot at McCool Junction!

Danny Lasoski snared a $3,000 win by topping Friday night's Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest main event at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE. (Joe Orth photo)

Lonnie Wheatley, McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. (May 27, 2011) – Danny Lasoski turned the tables on shop-mate and nephew Brian Brown by taking the $3,000 winner’s share in Friday night’s 25-lap Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest main event at Junction Motor Speedway.

One night after chasing Brown to the stripe at I-80 Speedway, “The Dude” prevailed this time by snaring his second ASCS Regional feature win of the year aboard the Kistler-powered Creason Pipeline Service/Michael Ross Foundation No. 33 Eagle.

For the second night in a row, the redraw landed Brown and Lasoski side-by-side on the front row.  And, just like Thursday night, Brown gunned into the lead at the drop of the green flag.  He wouldn’t lead all the way this time though.

Lasoski, just one week away from being inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, powered by Brown on the top side of turns one and two on the fourth round and led the rest of the way.

After fending off several challenges, the race was interrupted for the only time after 21 laps when the red flag flew for an Isaac Schreurs flip.  Lasoski slipped away on the restart to win comfortably over Brown.

Behind the lead duo, seventh-starter Shane Stewart moved up to fourth in the initial seven rounds and diced with Wayne Johnson before taking third on the 21st circuit.  Johnson battled back into the show position on the white flag lap, with Stewart settling for fourth.

California native Justyn Cox, just four days shy of his 17th birthday, posted his best ASCS finish since a Rocky Mountain win in August of 2009 at Casper, WY, by rounding out the top five in a second Brian Brown entry.

Chad Humston was sixth, with Ryan Roberts, Jordan Boston, Ryan Bickett and Brady Bacon completing the top ten.

Johnson, Cox, Lasoski and Brown topped heat race action for the 30-car field, with Don Droud, Jr., winning the “B” Main.

Mark Pace’s night came to an early end when he climbed a wheel in flipped in turn three on the opening lap of the first heat race.  Pace was uninjured.

The Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest Region will next be in action in conjunction with the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National series at Eagle Raceway’s Eagle Nationals on June 10-11.

Gary Wright kicked off the Smiley's Racing Products ASCS Gulf South Region "Memorial Day Classic" weekend triple by winning Friday night's 25-lap feature at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, TX. (ASCS Gulf South photo)

Lonnie Wheatley, BEAUMONT, Texas (May 27, 2011) – Just because he’s being inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame next weekend doesn’t mean that Gary Wright is done winning races.  “The Texan” made that evident on Friday night by topping the opening leg of the Smiley’s Racing Products ASCS Gulf South three-night “Memorial Day Classic” at Golden Triangle Raceway Park.

Wright added his 18th overall ASCS Regional win to 127 previous ASCS National triumphs by driving his No. 9 Maxim to victory lane for the fourth in just six 2011 outings aboard his own entry, becoming the first repeat ASCS Gulf South winner of the season through nine events.

While Wright started the feature from the front row outside, it was pole starter Gary Watson leading the opening circuit before Wright took command.

Wright paced the field the rest of the way, taking the checkered flag ahead of fifth-starter Jason Johnson, defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek, current Gulf South points leader Tommy Bryant and Michael Dupuy, who earned Hard Charger honors by racing from 15th to round out the top five.

Watson was sixth, with Michael McNeil, John Pate, Wes Miller and George White completing the top ten.

Johnson, Chris Sweeney, Watson and Wright topped heat race action, with Dupuy winning the “B” Main.

The Smiley’s Racing Products ASCS Gulf South “Memorial Day Classic” continues on Saturday night at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX, before finishing up at Lufkin’s Speedarama Raceway on Sunday.

With his $2,000 triumph in Friday’s feature, Wright is eligible for a $1,000 bonus if he can pull down wins over each of the next two nights as well.

Lucas Oil ASCS on Deck: I-30 & Eagle!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (May 24, 2011) – It’s been several weeks since the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National series has seen action.  But, after one more spurt of Regional action this weekend that includes an unprecedented slate of 16 events throughout the nation, the spotlight shifts back to the National scene over the next pair of weekends.

The Lucas Oil National Sprint Cars pick right back up where they left off with a card next Saturday night, June 4, at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway before moving on to Nebraska’s Eagle Raceway the following weekend, June 10-11, for the prestigious Eagle Nationals which will be taped for later broadcast on the VERSUS Network.

With the Third Annual Rock ‘N Roll 50 flooded out earlier this month at West Memphis’ Riverside International Speedway, the series last saw action at I-30 Speedway on April 15-16 where Jeff Swindell parked a Roush/Yates Ford in ASCS National victory lane for the first time and then Gary Wright snapped a victory drought by becoming the eighth different series winner in as many events thus far in 2011.

The June 4 card at I-30 Speedway will mark Round Nine in the $60,000 championship chase, with Rounds Ten and Eleven at Eagle Raceway the following weekend.  Only five National nights had been completed prior to the I-30 and Eagle June weekends of 2010.

Since the last National card at I-30 in mid-April, the National forces have busied themselves in different ways.  Current points leader Shane Stewart has pulled Posse cash from the URC ranks, reigning champion Jason Johnson has added three Regional scores in Lone Star and Gulf South action, Johnny Herrera has picked off a pair of Southwest wins in Arizona, Jeff Swindell has turned circles in his West Memphis playground at Riverside including a May 7 win versus the local shoes, Tim Crawley snared a May 14 win at I-30, Aaron Reutzel, Seth Bergman and Zach Chappell have each competed closer to home in Regional action, Brady Bacon posted a Lone Star runner-up run at Cowtown before chasing storms to turn a few wingless laps, Logan Forler plucked an Eagle win, Dustin Morgan has tried I-30, Tony Bruce, Jr., has made random appearances and Gary Wright has tried to stock up on parts for the long haul.

The winner of USA Raceway’s Copper on Dirt in February, Shane Stewart holds the early advantage as he tries to claim his second Lucas Oil National Sprint Car championship.  Shane is most closely pursued by a quartet of veteran contenders that includes Johnny Herrera, Jeff Swindell, Tim Crawley and Gary Wright.  A host of youngsters are right in the mix too including Brady Bacon, Seth Bergman and Aaron Reutzel before a pair of tenured series veterans that complete the top ten, Tony Bruce, Jr., and Zach Chappell.

Meanwhile, Jason Johnson is outside the top ten looking in after finishing off Aussie duty in February, though the JJR No. 41 entry is just two points off Stewart’s Paul Silva-owned No. 57 in the owner portion of the chase.

In last year’s June event, Brady Bacon picked off third career ASCS National event.  One weekend later at the Eagle Nationals, Danny Wood snared preliminary honors before Jason Johnson picked off his first series win of the year en route to a second Lucas Oil ASCS National championship.

Johnson is among this year’s eight feature winners with a Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals triumph on March 25, though Bacon and Wood both look to add their names to the 2011 list of victors that includes Stewart, Johnson, Herrera, Swindell, Wright, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Tim Kaeding and Kyle Larson.

Others vying for a first Lucas Oil ASCS National win of 2011 include the likes of Tim Crawley, Zach Chappell and Tony Bruce, Jr., each of whom has enjoyed series success at I-30 Speedway in recent years.
