Lucas Oil ASCS to Sanction 33rd Annual Jackson Nationals!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 31, 2011) – Yet another marquee event has been added to the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National slate, as the series will invade Minnesota for the 33rd Annual Jackson Nationals on August 19-20.

It will mark the first time for the Lucas Oil ASCS National series to sanction the history-rich event atop the high-banked, ½-mile Jackson Speedway clay oval in Jackson, MN.

With the addition of the Jackson Nationals to the slate, the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National series is now slated for 38 nights of competition at 15 different tracks throughout a dozen states.

The August venture to Jackson Speedway will be just the second time in Minnesota for the ASCS National forces, with Wayne Johnson winning the only previous feature event in the state at Brainerd in 2007.  Paired with car owner Bryan Sundby for the balance of the Lucas Oil ASCS National slate, Johnson was a Jackson Nationals winner in 2005.

The Lucas Oil Sprint Cars have opened the 2011 season in rousing fashion with six different winners in as many events, including Kyle Larson, Tim Kaeding, Johnny Herrera, Shane Stewart, Jason Johnson and Sam Hafertepe, Jr.  This comes off a 2010 season that featured 19 different winners in 35 main events, the most single-season feature winners in modern ASCS history.

With $60,000 of the $250,000 points fund earmarked for the top spot, Bixby, OK, native Shane Stewart is out to the early driver points lead with a 57-point advantage over New Mexico’s Johnny Herrera while the JJR No. 41 holds the owner points edge over Paul Silva’s No. 57 by 37 markers.

With last weekend’s 38th Annual Devil’s Bow Spring Nationals in the books, next up for the Lucas Oil Sprint Cars is a two-night stand atop Little Rock, Arkansas’ high-banked, ¼-mile I-30 Speedway red clay oval on April 15-16.

Roney wins 1st in POWRi Lucas Oil Midget Series, Langston takes Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Sprints at Du Quoin

DU QUOIN, Ill. (March 26, 2011)—Tony Roney won the first race of his POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series career Saturday, taking the Dean King Memorial at the Southern Illinois Center’s Mini Magic Mile.

Roney, a 42-year-old from Herculaneum, Mo., regarded his victory as one of the high points of his career. He’s been racing in POWRi since it began. The series opened its seventh season Saturday.

“It’s right up there,” Roney said. “Qualifying for the A main at the Chili Bowl last year is up there, too. I’d won POWRi Micros (600cc Outlaw Sprints), but never in Midgets.”

Roney started third in the 22-car feature. He was running fifth when leader Tyler Courtney spun on the inside and blocked the track, causing the cars directly behind to crash. Roney was able to stop short of the wreck and inherited the lead on the third lap. He led the final 38 on the one-fifth mile dirt track.

“The track was completely blocked,” Roney said. “There was nothing else I could do. It was that or kill the engine. It could have gone either way.”

Roney wasn’t seriously challenged the rest of the way, running a smooth and consistent inside line.

“I felt like I was hot lapping,” Roney said.

Nick Knepper, of Belleville, Ill., finished second, out-dueling Tim Siner, of Dupo, Ill. Knepper ran the outside and Siner the inside and they were virtually even for 20 straight laps before Knepper pulled ahead with five to go.

Dereck King, of Vienna, Ill., finished fourth and Andrew Felker, of Carl Junction, Mo., was fifth.

Ryan Langston, of Greenfield, Ind., won the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series at the Dean King Memorial, besting a field that began with 76 entries a nd was pared down to 23 for the 30-lap feature.

“It’s really tough competition,” Langston said. “I got lucky in my heat, started sixth and won it. I was able to pass so many cars on a track that is difficult to pass upon. That gave me the points to start on the front row in the feature.”

Langston, 31, challenged Devon Piper, of Springfield, Ill., for the lead for 18 laps. On the 19th, he darted decisively inside in Turn One and pulled away. Langston said it was his “fifth or sixth” win in the POWRi 600cc Micro Series, but his first since 2008.

“I kind of got a little bit of a run and didn’t’ know if I had him cleared and I held it in there,” Langston said. “The more laps we ran, he (Piper) couldn’t hold the bottom and I waited and waited for the right moment.”

King passed Piper on the outside exiting Turn Two on the final lap to take second. Piper was third, Scottie Gretzmacher, of St. Genevieve, Mo., was fourth and Joe B. Miller, of Millersville, Mo., was fifth.

“It would have been nice to win my grandfather’s memorial race,” King said. “We’ve run second a couple of times in this race. We’ve won at Du Quoin, but not this race. We had a good run. It took too long to get the track working the way I needed it. We were set up to run up top and it didn’t come in until there were 10 laps to go.”

The next event for POWRi’s Lucas Oil Midgets and Speedway Motors Micros is April 22 at Jacksonville (Ill.) Speedway.

POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series results: 1. Tony Roney, 2. Nick Knepper, 3. Tim Siner, 4. Dereck King, 5. Andrew Felker, 6. Tyler Courtney, 7. Casey Shuman, 8. Danny Stratton, 9. Brad Kuhn, 10, Caleb Armstrong, 11. Shane Cocckrum, 12. Rich Camfield, 13. Tracy Hines, 14. Tyler Robbins, 15. Zach Daum, 16. Chris Morgan, 17. Kevin Thomas, 18. Dave Darland, 19. Brad Loyet, 20. Chris Gwinn, 21. Brett Anderson, 22. Steven Weber.

POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series feature results: 1. Ryan Langston, 2. Dereck King, 3. Devon Piper, 4. Scottie Gretzmacher, 5. Joe B. Miller, 6. Kara King, 7. Jordan Campbell, 8. JB Gilbert, 9. Jimmy Wood, 10. Mike Terry, 11. Alex Harris, 12. Megan Wood, 13. Randy Brown, 14. Ryan Leak, 15. Jake Palmisano, 16. Andrew Felker, 17. Ryan Marsch, 18. Spencer Montgomery, 19. Hafertepe Takes Lucas Oil ASCS Honors in Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals!

Lonnie Wheatley, MESQUITE, Texas (March 26, 2011) – Sam Hafertepe, Jr., became the sixth different winner in as many nights of 2011 Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National action by taking top honors in Saturday night’s 38th Annual Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals 30-lap championship finale.

After pacing the initial pair of circuits, Hafertepe rallied past both Danny Lasoski and leader Brian Brown on a lap 17 restart en route to the $6,000 triumph, his second career ASCS National victory aboard the Fisher-powered Lone Star Speedway No. 15h Maxim.

Struggling with a faulty wing slider, the Sunnyvale, TX, shoe slipped back as far as fifth at the race’s midway point before rallying for the win in front of current Lucas Oil Sprint Car points leader Shane Stewart from eleventh and defending series champion Jason Johnson in third after winning Friday night’s preliminary feature.

“I’d written myself off, the wing was stuck all the way back and I couldn’t get going,” Hafertepe explained.  “It finally got where I could keep my momentum up though and we were able to get back up front.”

Starting from the pole position, Hafertepe outgunned Brian Brown for the lead at the drop of the green flag and led just two laps before Brown and fifth-starter Lasoski raced by on the third circuit.

Brown kept the FVP No. 21 Maxim in front of Missouri relative Lasoski over the ensuing rounds, with sixth-starting Brady Bacon putting the top side of turns one and two to good use to race around Hafertepe for third on the ninth circuit and then take second from Lasoski by the midway point as Wayne Johnson relegated Hafertepe to fifth.

A seemingly innocuous caution for Eric Baldaccini’s race-ending excursion off turn three after 16 laps changed the complexion of the race though, as Wayne Johnson clipped an infield tire in turn two and slid to a stop with front end damage on the restart with Bacon falling victim to a failed fuel line on the next try.

Up to third behind Brown and Lasoski after the misfortune of Johnson and Bacon, Hafertepe hustled past them both for the lead and checked out in short order with 2009 series champion Shane Stewart taking over second by the 19th round.

After a final caution for Dustin Morgan in turn two on the 24th lap, Hafertepe checked out again only to reach traffic again before the white flag flew.  Stewart tried to move in, but was unable to mount a challenge on the 25-year-old.

Stewart settled for runner-up honors in Paul Silva’s Wesmar-powered Rockstar Energy Drink No. 57 A.R.T., holding off the late charges of Friday night preliminary winner Jason Johnson in the Don Ott-powered Haynes No. 41 Maxim.

Lasoski crossed the stripe fourth, with Brown rounding out the top five after pacing 13 early rounds.  In just his second National start since suffering severe burns last July, Travis Rilat charged from the 17th starting position to claim sixth with 15th-starter Danny Wood, 14th-starter Matt Covington, “Texan” Gary Wright and Missouri’s Kyle Bellm completing the top ten.

Covington, Wood, Johnny Herrera, Tim Crawley, Stewart and Brown won Saturday night’s heat races.  Rilat made a lap 12 move around Zach Chappell to win the first “B” Main, while Channin Tankersley’s last corner pass of Dustin Morgan netted the win in an enthralling second “B” Main.

A total of 54 different drivers took part in the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters portion of the 38th Annual Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals without the red flag ever flying over the course of two full nights.

Lonnie Wheatley, MESQUITE, Texas (March 25, 2011) – Reigning Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National champion Jason Johnson made a triumphant stateside return by racing to victory lane in Friday night’s 38th Annual Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals 25-lap preliminary feature.

In his first U.S. start since finishing off the World Series Sprintcar owner’s championship for Alan Haynes in Australia, Johnson paced the final two circuits to post his 49th career ASCS National triumph after a spirited duel with Jeff Swindell over the final half of the race atop the storied ½-mile clay oval that had the crowd on its feet.

“If the crowd doesn’t get excited about a race like that, there’s something wrong!” Johnson exclaimed after the fiercely contested main event.

After swapping the point several times while racing through heavy traffic with Sam Hafertepe, Jr., joining in the lead fray as well, “The Ragin’ Cajun” assumed the point for keeps when Swindell popped a left rear tire and did a quick 360-degree spin exiting turn four with the white flag in sight.

“I thought we were gonna end up second there, lapped traffic kinda went his way and he kinda broke away,” Johnson explained of Swindell.  “We weren’t gonna win the thing.”

After the ensuing caution, Johnson paced the final two circuits aboard the Don Ott-powered Haynes/Mesilla Valley Transport No. 41 Maxim to take the checkered flag in front of Hafertepe, with “B” Main transfers Brady Bacon and Danny Lasoski rallying from deep in the field to claim the third and fourth lock-in positions to Saturday night’s $6,000-to-win Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals championship finale.

Johnson and Swindell started the feature event alongside each other in the third row, with Eric Baldaccini outgunning pole starter Aaron Reutzel for the early lead.  Up to third in just two laps when the first caution flew for Travis Rilat, who came to a stop with front end issues, Swindell blasted past Reutzel in turns one and two and then Baldaccini exiting turn four to take command on the third lap.

Sixth-starter Johnson was hot on heels, moving into second by the fifth round as the initial half-dozen circuits were interrupted by another pair of cautions including one for an Evan Pardo spin in turn two and then a flat right front tire on sixth-running Seth Bergman.

With the early yellows out of the way, Johnson stalked Swindell for several laps and began pressuring for the lead at the midway point.  With heavy traffic in play by the 15th round, the veteran racers dueled for the point with seventh-starter Hafertepe moving in as well to join in on the lead chase.

While Johnson officially slipped around Swindell at the stripe on the 18th lap, the pair jockeyed back and forth on several occasions with Swindell getting the upper hand and finally breaking away with two laps to go, only to have his left rear tire disintegrate just as Will Hale was presenting the white flag.  Rather than a potential second career Lucas Oil ASCS National win, Swindell limped to the pit area and was credited with 21st in the final rundown.

Johnson cruised to the stripe on the green-white-checkered run, with Hafertepe settling for runner-up honors in the Fisher-powered Lone Star Speedway No. 15h Maxim.  “I wasn’t quite as fast as Jason and Jeff, I was a little too tight,” Hafertepe explained.  “The main thing tonight was to get locked in and we got that done.”

After winning the night’s second “B” Main, 2010 series points runner-up Brady Bacon sliced through the field from 18th, gaining ten positions in the initial six circuits.  Bacon cracked the top five with a move past Reutzel on the ninth circuit and later disposed of Michael Dupuy before claiming the show position in the Wesmar-powered Tel-Star Communications No. 99 Triple-X.

Following Bacon’s lead from one row further back, Danny Lasoski raced from 20th to take the fourth and final lock-in position to Saturday’s finale with a white-flag lap of Michael Dupuy for the spot.

Dupuy nipped Wayne Johnson at the line to round out the top five in the Jaz-Tek No. 3x, with Johnson sixth in his debut aboard the BDS Motorsports No. 38.  Johnny Herrera was seventh, with Brodix Rookie of the Year candidate Reutzel in eighth.

After taking full advantage of a late caution to snare the third and final transfer position from the second “B” Main after starting 13th, current Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National points leader Shane Stewart raced from 22nd to ninth, with 2005 Spring Nationals champion Danny Jennings completing the top ten.

Hafertepe, Reutzel, Bergman, Baldaccini, Herrera and Dupuy topped heat race action for Friday night’s 52-car field.  John Carney II slipped past Kyle Bellm on the fourth round en route to winning the first “B” Main, while Bacon assumed a lead he wouldn’t relinquish in the second “B” Main when Channin Tankersley broke while leading on the eighth circuit.

Saturday’s 38th Annual Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals championship finale gets under way at 8:00 p.m.
