The tradition continues - Ohio Sprint Speedweek features 8 races over 9 days; Kasey Kahne to compete in first 6 events

CAMARGO, IL (6-11-11) By Brian Liskai – It can make or break a championship
run. The heat, dirt, travel, late nights and early mornings can take its
toll on man and machine. It’s an event like no other in sprint car racing.
It’s the 29th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek featuring eight nights of racing
over nine days across the Buckeye State.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions will kick off the
“must-see” speedweek on Friday, June 17 at Attica Raceway Park and
concludes on Saturday, June 25 with a $10,000-to-win event at Fremont
Speedway.

And, to make it even more exciting, NASCAR Sprint Cup super star Kasey
Kahne
will strap into a 1,400-pound, 900 horsepower sprint car and compete
during the first six speedweek events. The Enumclaw, Washington native
drives the Red Bull #4 Toyota in NASCAR and owns two teams that compete in
the World of Outlaw sprint series – Joey Saldana and Cody Darrah – and
co-owns another car that is driven by Paul McMahan. And, on occasion,
fellow NASCAR driver Brad Sweet – who competes in the Camping World Truck
Series – climbs behind the wheel of one of Kahne’s sprint cars during
speedweek.

“Speedweek is just one of those events fans trek to from all over the
Midwest. Last year we had six different winners over nine events and handed
out over $240,000 throughout the week,” said Guy Webb, President/CEO of the
All Stars. “Having Kasey competing at the first six shows will bring in new
fans which will add to the excitement of speedweek. He is a fan favorite
and usually sticks around after the races to sign autographs for several
fans.”

Last year, Connecticut native David Gravel celebrated his 18th birthday
during speedweek with his first All Star win coming at Limaland. His
consistent finishes throughout the week would bring him the 2010 Ohio
Sprint Speedweek Championship.

Two-time and defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer would grab three wins
during the week – including the $10,000 finale at Fremont – to finish just
three points behind Gavel in the speedweek championship battle. Four time
speedweek champion and current national and Ohio Region point leader Dale
Blaney would finish third in the speedweek points, recording two victories
during the week.  In fact, Blaney has not finished out of the top five in
speedweek points since 2002. Multi-time Attica and Fremont champion Byron
Reed would take the win at Attica during speedweek with Rob Chaney
(Hilltop) and Sweet (Waynesfield) taking the other victories during the
week.

Last year, the average car counts over speedweek were in the mid-30s with
Attica having the high car-count of the week at 42. There were 86 different
drivers who competed during the nine nights of racing.

On a little bit of a sad note, the 2011 Ohio Sprint Speedweek will not see
Mark Keegan in competition, marking the first time in the event’s 29-year
history the Fremont, Ohio native hasn’t raced in at least one speedweek
event. Keegan retired after the 2010 season.

The All Star tradition begins Friday, June 17 at Attica Raceway Park in
northern Ohio, then heads south to KC Raceway near Chillicothe on Saturday,
June 18
. Then its north to one of the original speedweek tracks –
Millstream Speedway near Findlay – on Sunday, June 19. Monday finds the All
Stars travelling down I-75 to “the Field,” Waynesfield Raceway Park,
followed by the first of two stops at the historic Fremont Speedway on
Tuesday, June 21
. Wednesday, June 22 fines the All Stars at another of the
traditional speedweek stops – Sharon Speedway near Hartford, Ohio. Everyone
collects their breath on Thursday before finishing out speedweek on Friday,
June 24
at Limaland Motorsports Park and the finale at Fremont Speedway on
Saturday, June 25
.

Dewease gets around Layton late to take Williams Grove All Star victory

MECHANICSBURG, PA (6-10-11) By Brian Liskai – A few years ago Lance Dewease
hit the road with the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions and nearly
took the title. Now, with the All Stars’ new regional points system,
Dewease could well be on his way to a championship - especially after
winning his second race in a week. The Fayetteville, Pennsylvania resident
got around Chad Layton late in the race Friday at the legendary Williams
Grove Speedway
and went on to score his 29th career victory with the All
Stars to pad his lead in the series’ Eastern Region points.

The fans were treated to great racing throughout the field. In fact, with
two laps to go three-time All Star champion Dale Blaney, Layton and Donnie
Kreitz Jr. were three wide battling for second!

Chad Layton looked to have the race in hand, holding a commanding lead when
Aaron Ott flipped out of the track on lap 19. This put Dewease - who won
last Sunday at Clinton County Speedway to take the All Stars’ Eastern
Region Point lead – right on Layton’s tail. Layton not only had to deal
with Dewease, who holds 76 career wins at Williams Grove, but an
ill-handling car as his front wing had been damaged. On the restart Layton
did everything he could to try and keep Dewease behind him. Dewease was
able to get around Layton on lap 21.

“We haven’t been real good…we really weren’t that good tonight. Chad
(Layton) had his problems with his nose wing..if anybody knows when the
nose wing falls off or falls down like that you really can’t get through
the corner. I really have to give him credit. On that restart he did
everything he could…he used up all the track he could to try and keep us
behind him. I was trying to get around him without hitting him…these things
are a handful when the nose wing’s like that,” said Dewease beside his
Catoctin Motorsports, Viper Risk Management, Advanced Development services
backed #30c. “We were fortunate to get the win.”

“All and all we’ve been getting a little bit better. We won at Clinton
County
but we really weren’t happy so we put a different car together for
the rest of the week. I think it’s a better car than what we had. We’re
doing things so much different than we did last year…I don’t know why we
have to but we do. But we’re gaining on it,” added Dewease.

For Layton a second place finish was bitter-sweet.

“It was a handful…I usually don’t drive like that. I’m sure Dale (Blaney)
and those guys were probably wondering ‘what the hell is he doing,’ but
with a few laps to go I was just trying to hang on and not sink and drown.
It was a heart-breaker for me to see him (Dewease) go by. I knew we had a
real good race car. Even with the front wing falling off I thought we might
have a chance but he proved other wise,” said Layton beside his
Middleswarth Jalapeno Flavored Potato Chips, Don Ott Racing Engines, Emory
Transmissions J&J Auto Racing backed machine.

Donnie Kreitz Jr. – a four-time Williams Grove champion - would bring the
Kreitz Oval Track Parts backed sprint car home in third.

“Jamie just did an incredible job with the car. I’m usually not any good
when the track’s like this but he had the car so good it was easy to drive.
Dale…he ran me really clean there…he could have run across my nose. It was
a lot of fun,” said Kreitz.

The 30-lap feature would see pole-sitter Blaney fall quickly third as
Layton and Dewease get around him on the first circuit. Layton would hit
lapped traffic by lap 7 and would pull away as Dewease, Blaney and Daryn
Pittman
gave chase.

Layton’s big lead would begin to evaporate when his front wing broke,
allowing Dewease to close. The race would come to a halt on lap 19 when Ott
tumbled over the turn 1 guardrail. Layton would use up the entire track to
try and hold off Dewease on the restart, but his ill-handling machine was
just no match for the #30c. Dewease drives around Layton for the lead
exiting turn two on lap 21 and pulls away.

Now Layton has to deal with Blaney and a closing Don Kreitz. With six laps
to go, Blaney is racing side-by-side with Layton. Blaney would pass low in
turn 1 and Layton would return the favor in turn two. With two laps to go,
Kreitz would make it a three car battle for second – at one point down the
back stretch they were three wide for the runner-up spot!

Layton was able to hold on for second and Kreitz would sneak by Blaney on
the last corner of the last lap to nab third.

Dewease now sits tied with Gary Wright for 17th on the All Stars’ all-time
win list, just one win away from matching Danny Smith’s total of 30
victories with the series.

R.J. Johnson Takes Another ASCS Canyon Win at CSP!

Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (June 11, 2011) – R.J. Johnson made it two Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region wins in a row by taking top honors in Saturday night’s Inaugural Summer Sizzle 30-lap main event at Canyon Speedway Park.

Leading all 30 circuits to take his third ASCS Canyon win of the year and 11th of his career, Johnson also put a stop to Jeremy Sherman’s CSP perfection in 2011.  Sherman, who had topped all three previous events at CSP this year, was fourth.

While Johnson officially led all the way aboard Bobby Martin’s Pro Flyer-powered Weiler Farms/Pecon Builders No. 51 Maxim, Charles Davis, Jr., did slip by once in the late going only to have the move nullified by a caution flag.

Johnson went on to win over two-time and defending series champion Davis, Jr., who climbed from the tenth position to claim runner-up honors.  Josh Pelkey claimed the show position, with current points leader Sherman racing from 11th to fourth.

Mike Spencer rounded out the top five, with 17th-starter Mike Martin, Joshua Hodges, 20th-starter Bruce St. James, Ryan Linder and Thomas Ogle completing the top ten.

Dover a Lucas Oil ASCS Winner in Eagle Nationals!

Lonnie Wheatley, EAGLE, Neb. (June 11, 2011) – A full-time Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National title contender in 2010, Springfield, Nebraska’s Jack Dover has just made spot starts in National action thus far in 2011.

The 21-year-old made the most of his latest start, racing into the lead on the 28th of 30 laps to win Saturday night’s Eagle Nationals atop the 1/3-mile Eagle Raceway clay oval in front of a vocal home-track crowd.  Dover pocketed $6,000 for his fifth career ASCS National triumph and first of this year.

Reeling in race-long leader Jordan Boston in the waning laps, Dover was handed the lead when Boston looped it exiting turn four on the 28th round.  Boston kept his mount under power and salvaged a third-place finish in his first career ASCS National feature start behind Dover and runner-up Johnny Herrera.

“I think I would have got by him (Boston) anyway, but you never can tell,” Dover explained in victory lane.

After winning his heat race in impressive fashion, Boston drew the pole of the main event with Washington’s Seth Bergman alongside.  The pair raced wheel-to-wheel over the initial pair of circuits in front of fourth-starter Dover before Boston finally established command.

With Boston cruising out front, Dover finally made his way past Bergman for second on the 20th circuit, just moments for the race’s third and final caution flag flew when Logan Forler came to a stop in turn four after slapping the retaining wall with his right rear tire.

With a pair of lapped cars separating Boston from Dover on the restart, including the leader’s father Mike Boston, Boston jumped out to a strong lead.  Dover wasted little time disposing of the lappers though, and with a handful of laps remaining he began to reel in the leader.

Dover had closed in on Boston’s tailtank entering turn three on the 28th lap and was poised to make a bid for the lead.  He never had to though, as Boston got caught in the middle of the track trying to work traffic, got too loose and did a quick 360-degree spin on the low side exiting turn four.

Dover dashed on to the stripe unabated aboard the Shaver-powered Thorpe’s Body Shop/Homepride Roofing No. 53 Eagle, with Herrera making a charge from sixth to second over the final half of the race aboard the Wesmar-powered Champion Oil No. 45x Maxim.

Boston salvaged a podium finish by crossing the stripe third in the No. 4 entry, with Bergman posting his top Lucas Oil Sprint Car finish of the year by taking fourth in the Petersen Motorsports Wesmar-powered Superior Marine No. 23 Eagle.

Brady Bacon cracked ASCS National top five for the second time this year by rounding out the top five in the Wesmar-powered Fatheadz Eyewear No. 99 Triple X, with Shane Stewart posting Hard Charger honors by racing from 23rd to sixth after using his second provisional of the year.

Pulling double duty as racer and promoter for the night, Tony Bruce, Jr., raced from 18th to seventh in the main event, with Danny Wood, Scott Winters and Gary Wright completing the top ten.

The feature was red-flagged after four laps when defending Lucas Oil Sprint Car champion Jason Johnson flipped in turn four.  Johnson was uninjured but done for the night.  Five laps later, another caution flew for a turn two tangle that eliminated John Klabunde, Wayne Johnson and Doug Lovegrove from competition.

Third-place finisher Boston was one of six drivers making a first career Lucas Oil ASCS National feature start on Saturday, with others including Trevor Grossenbacher (13th), Bryan Gossel (17th), Tyler Drueke (18th), John Klabunde (21st) and Lovegrove (23rd).

Wood, Forler, J. Boston, Winters and Herrera topped heat race action for the 42-car field, with Aaron Reutzel and Bruce, Jr., winning the 12-lap “B” Mains.

Jeff Osborn flipped getting into turn one on the second lap of the night’s fourth heat race and then turned over again in turn two after two “B” Main laps.   He was uninjured both times.

Lucas Oil ASCS Rained Out Friday at Eagle; Saturday Still On

EAGLE, Neb. (June 10, 2011) – Excessive rain has forced the cancellation of Friday night’s scheduled Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National event at Eagle Raceway.  Saturday night’s Eagle Nationals championship finale is still on as scheduled, with racing action set to go green at 7:00 p.m.

TBJ Promotions, Eagle Raceway and Lucas Oil ASCS would like to invite fans out early Saturday for a pre-race pit party, with the pits open to all from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Shaffer finds car, Fonda to his liking, picks up 37th All Star win

FONDA, N.Y. (6-8-11) By Brian Liskai– When you find that special sprint car
– one that no matter the track conditions or what you do to it it’s fast –
you exude confidence. Tim Shaffer has that car and that confidence. The
Aliquippa, Pennsylvania resident charged from his 11th starting spot and
passed Fred Rahmer on the last lap Wednesday night to earn the O’Reilly
Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions at Fonda Speedway.

“The track came in late for us. Brian (Kemenah, crew chief) told me to just
keep running where you’re running we’re going to run in the top three and
boy it’s just amazing. The guys work so hard on this thing…it’s just great
to be here,” said Shaffer beside his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook owned
machine.

“We’ve been wanting to win real bad…maybe trying a little too hard and
ended up flipping this car at Fremont and bent it a little bit but it
didn’t seem to matter tonight,” added  “The Steel City Outlaw” beside his
Kistler Engines, Kistler Racing Products backed machine. “The J&J chassis
and VRP Shocks have been working great.”

Following a lengthy rain delay that pushed hot laps back to nearly 9:30
p.m
. the program moved along quickly. The 30-lap feature had the All Star’s
national and Ohio region point leader and three time series’ champion Dale
Blaney and perennial Pennsylvania winner Fred Rahmer battling for the lead.
However, before the field could get a lap in Jessica Zemken brought the
race to a halt when she took a nasty looking flip but emerged unscathed.

On the complete restart, Blaney and Rahmer resumed their battle for the
lead, but Blaney quickly began to fade. Rahmer set a blistering pace,
hitting lapped traffic by lap eight, allowing Greg Hodnett to close.
Hodnett would take the lead on lap 11. A caution on lap 13 for Jami Russell
would give the leader a clear track.

Blaney’s run would end on lap 16 as his Ti22 Performance machine began to
smoke, forcing him to the pits. Rahmer would rally to trade slide jobs with
Hodnett for the lead a lap later. The pair caught lapped traffic again on
lap 21 when disaster struck for Hodnett who slowed in turn three to bring
out the caution. This gave David Gravel a shot at Rahmer for the lead.

While that battle was going on, all eyes were on Shaffer. The two-time and
defending All Star champion had steadily worked his way forward and was
third with four laps to go. Shaffer would drive around Gravel a lap later
and quickly closed on Rahmer. With the white flag out, Shaffer dives under
Rahmer in turns one and two and slides up in front and speeds away for the
victory.

Shaffer is now tied with Steve Kinser with 37 career All Star wins to sit
12th in the series’ all-time win list, just two behind Doug Wolfgang.

“Around lap 16 we got a valve or piston and probably should have pulled in
but with this points series you have to stay out there. This is a good
motor and I hated to hurt but it did a great job all night except there at
the end,” said Rahmer beside his C&S Lawn Landscaping, Ti22, Bair’s Tree
Service, Tru Line Contractors backed #51.

Lance Dewease would drive hard to a third place finish, moving him into the
point lead for the All Star’s Easter Region points.

“I knew Tim was pretty good…he got by me pretty easy. I thought were pretty
decent early but just couldn’t get going late. We need to keep doing this
and get through this weekend with good runs,” said Dewease beside his
Catoctin Motorsports, Viper Risk Management backed #30c.

Dewease holds off Henderson for Clinton County All Star win

MACKEYVILLE, PA (6-5-11) By Brian Liskai – Lance Dewease and Justin
Henderson made the first appearance of the O'Reilly Auto Parts All Star
Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars at Clinton County Raceway a memorable one
Sunday, June 5. The pair raced side-by-side for several laps for the lead
before Dewease took control. Then, Henderson mounted a late race challenge
but Dewease was able to hold him off for his 28th career All Star victory.

"Our car really wasn’t that good…I thought Justin had a better car. The top
was pretty nice up there in the beginning and I gave it all we had and got
the lead. I really didn't know where to run in 3 and 4…I floated in the
middle and bottom and tried to keep my momentum up. Then we got into lapped
traffic and I couldn’t see the top any more and didn’t know if I was even
on the track," said Dewease beside his Catoctin Motorsports, Viper Risk
Management, Advanced Development Services backed #30c.

The win moves Dewease closer to Dale Blaney for the All Star’s Eastern
Region Points Championship and the $20,000 prize at the end of the year.

At the drop of the green flag, Henderson and Dewease quickly began their
battle but a Dylan Procter spin would mean another start. On the second
start Dewease and Henderson again ran side-by-side for the lead. That
battle would be interrupted on lap three for an Alan Cole spin. On the
restart Dewease was able to pull away slightly, but his lead was wiped out
when Procter and Scott Lutz both spun in turn four.

While the focus was on the battle up front, Dale Blaney and Tyler Walker
were charging through the pack. Walker had flipped in his heat, pulled out
the back-up car, came from the back of the B-main to a transfer spot and
had driven from 24th starting spot in the A-main an 11th place finish.
Blaney patiently worked his way from 14th to a sixth place finish.

Dewease continued to lead Henderson while Sam Hafertepe Jr. charged toward
the front, moving into third by lap 10. A Pete Miller spin on lap 12 would
bunch the field up once again. On the restart with a clear track in front
of him, Dewease was able to pull away, but that lead was wiped out five
laps later when Bob Howard spun. Again Dewease was able to build a lead
until he hit lapped traffic with five circuits remaining. Henderson quickly
closed as Dewease struggled to get by the lapped machines due to the dusty
conditions. However, Dewease was able to hold on for the victory.

"I knew Lance would be tough. This is the type of place that has been a
thorn in my heel ever since I started racing. But we made leaps and bounds
tonight thanks to my crew chief Jim Shriner…he’s fantastic. He’s not just a
crew chief he’s a coach. He’s improved my game an awful lot. I appreciate
him just as much as the sponsors on our car…Montrose Molders, Mark
Millwright, Ti22," said Henderson. "Coming out here…my first time here and
I have to say I had a blast. It would be exciting to be here every week…I
wish we could. The fans here are fantastic."

"When we were coming through traffic I thought we were going to win the
thing. When we got into long green flag runs I think we kind of screwed up
our tire…I think with the grooving and siping we screwed up there," said
Hafertepe of his third place run.

"I think we could have prepared the right rear tire better than we did..we
might have had a shot at Lance and Justin. We got up beside Justin but we
really never had anything for him. I really didn’t know how good the top
was…I had a little searching to do but all and all it was a pretty good
night," added Hafertepe beside his Plumbfast Racing, Lonestar Speedway
backed #15h.

POWRi Midgets, Micros race for 1st time at West Plains, Springfield

POWRi’s Lucas Oil National Midget Series and Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micros will race for the first time at West Plains (Mo.) Motor Speedway on Friday (June 10) and Springfield (Mo.) Raceway on Saturday (June 11).
Nick Knepper, of Belleville, Ill., leads the Midget championship over Brad Loyet, of Sunset Hills, Mo., 1,030-850 with six events completed. Tim Siner, of Dupo, Ill., is third with 740, followed by Dereck King, of Vienna, Ill., with 730 and Brett Anderson, of Belleville, Ill., with 680.
The 24-year-old Knepper has two second places, three thirds, a fourth and an eighth in features in POWRi Midgets this season. Loyet was 19th at Du Quoin, Ill., and 16th at Grain Valley, Mo., in the opening two events before taking back-to-back victories at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., and Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville., Ill., and adding seconds at Brownstown, Ill., and Peoria, Ill.
Siner has four top-10s including third at Du Quoin, King has four-top fives including second at Belleville and Anderson has a victory at Grain Valley and three more top-eight finishes.
“The competition in POWRi is as tough as ever,” Knepper said. “There are seven or eight drivers capable of winning on any night.”
Knepper, fourth in the championship last season, will be hunting for his first win of 2011 this weekend.
“We’ve been consistent, so far, so good,” Knepper said. “Eighth at Brownstown has left a sour taste in my mouth, I know we were better than that. But we went from (starting) 14th to third at Peoria and that was a very good run. I’d like to get some wins. I’m tired of finishing behind those guys.”
Teams from the Southern Open Wheel Series (SOWS) and the Lucas Oil ASCS EcoTec Midgets are also expected to enter at West Plains and Springfield. Revolution Racing Engines will pay $150 to the top finisher and $50 for second with the RRE EcoTec.
King leads runner-up Trent Beckinger, of Evansville, Ind., 900-720 in the POWRi Outlaw Micros with Joe B. Miller, of Millersville, Mo., third with 710, J.B. Gilbert, of Charleston, Ill., fourth with 700 and Jordan Campbell, of Bloomington, Ill., fifth with 560.
King, a three-time POWRi Micros champion, has a victory at Wayne County, Ill., a pair of seconds, a third and a seventh in the five features. Beckinger didn’t enter DuQuoin and has climbed in the points with a win at Brownstown, Ill., second at Peoria, Ill., third at Wayne County and sixth at Belle-Clair.
“It’s really exciting to be that far up there after missing a race,” Beckinger said. “We’re going to really try to run all the races and run for the championship. I feel like POWRi is some of the best Micros racing in the nation.”

ASCS Canyon Region Set for Summer Sizzle at CSP!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 6, 2011) – The Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region returns to Peoria, Arizona’s Canyon  Speedway Park for this Saturday night’s Inaugural Summer Sizzle event atop the semi-banked, 3/8-mile clay oval.

And, entering the event nearly as hot as that summer Arizona sun is Jeremy Sherman, who has amassed a 110-point advantage in the championship points chase on the strength of eight top-fives in as many wingless ASCS Canyon Region events thus far in 2011.

Sherman, the ASCS Canyon Region champion in both 2007 and 2008, has bounced back from a pair of lackluster seasons in fashion similar to his championship campaigns with four wins in eight tries.  His other four finishes include a pair of runner-up showings, a third and a fourth.

Among Sherman’s four series triumphs this year are three at CSP, including a sweep of the track’s Inaugural Canyon Clash on the final weekend of April.  That sweep along with a March 26 win at CSP makes Sherman three-for-three in the ASCS Canyon events held at the Peoria track thus far in 2011.

While Sherman has topped four features overall, R.J. Johnson and Josh Pelkey are the only two other drivers to crack victory lane this season.  Johnson and Pelkey have both scored two wins.

In the title chase, Sherman holds a 110-point edge over two-time and defending champion Charles Davis, Jr.  While Davis, Jr., has been shut out of victory lane, he has finished either third or fourth in seven of eight feature events, with his only finish lower than fourth a sixth-place showing.

Johnson enters Saturday’s action third in points, with Pelkey in fourth.  Ronnie Clark rounds out the current top five in points, with the rest of the top ten including Andrew Reinbold, Matt Rossi, Bruce St. James, Dalten Gabbard and Mike Martin.

Saturday’s racing action at Canyon Speedway Park goes green at 7:30 p.m.

Peoria’s Canyon Speedway Park is located 25 miles north of Phoenix on I-17 to Exit 223, then 6.3 miles west.  For more information, contact the track at 602-258-7223.

The Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region brings the best of wingless Sprint Car racing action to fans in Arizona with 19 scheduled nights of competition at Tucson’s USA Raceway and Peoria’s Canyon Speedway Park.

The 2011 season marks the 20th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series, with approximately 200 nights of competition at tracks throughout the nation and into Canada.  Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of ten different Regions throughout the nation.

A HOT-Lone Star Double on Tap for ASCS Lone Star Region!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 6, 2011) – The Oil Medics ASCS Lone Star Region is all set for a HOT-Lone Star weekend double as the series takes to the dirt tracks in Waco and Kilgore this Friday and Saturday night.

The weekend kicks off with the annual ASCS Lone Star event at Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway.  Then, on Saturday night, it’s off to Kilgore’s Lone Star Speedway.

Friday’s event at Heart O’ Texas Speedway offers a $2,000 winner’s share with $1,500 for second.  Saturday’s card at Lone Star Speedway includes the standard Lone Star winner’s cut of $1,500.

While The Oil Medics ASCS Lone Star Region is south of the Red River, it’s a driver from north of that border that leads the way into the weekend as 21-year-old Matt Covington of Glenpool, OK, is atop the point charts after the initial four events of the season.

Covington, who slipped from first to third in ASCS Sooner points this past weekend, still holds a 40-point advantage over Godley’s Claud Estes in the Lone Star title chase.  Mesquite’s Martin Edwards has climbed to third in Lone Star points, with defending series champion Eric Baldaccini of Keller and then Flower Mound’s Justin Melton rounding out the current top five.

The balance of the current top ten in Lone Star points includes Evan Pardo (Gatesville), John Ricketts (Burleson), Junior Jenkins (Greenville), Robert Byrom (Fort Worth) and Chad Wilson (North Richland Hills).

Friday will be an opportunity for The Oil Medics ASCS Lone Star forces to get a look at Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway before the July 29 showdown versus the Smiley’s Racing Products ASCS Gulf South Region atop the Waco clay.  The Gulf South series took to the Heart O’ Texas in April with National contender Aaron Reutzel dropping in to take the win.  Wayne Johnson topped last year’s Lone Star card at Heart O’ Texas, with Skip Wilson topping the inaugural ASCS Lone Star event at Waco in 2009.

Saturday’s marks the second ASCS Lone Star stop of the season atop the newly reconfigured Lone Star Speedway, where Gary Wright took advantage of a late caution to win the series season opener in March after Eric Baldaccini held the lead much of the way.

Friday’s racing action at Heart O’ Texas Speedway is set to go green at 8:00 p.m., with Saturday’s tilt at Lone Star Speedway firing off at 7:30 p.m.

The high-banked, 1/4-mile Heart O' Texas Speedway clay oval is located in Waco, TX, off I-35 Exit 343, then 0.6 miles north on east frontage road.  For more information, contact the track at 254-829-2294.

Lucas Oil Sprint Cars Soar into this Weekend’s Eagle Nationals!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 6, 2011) – Last year, Jason Johnson and his newly-formed JJR team hit it’s Lucas Oil Sprint Car championship stride with an Eagle Nationals triumph.

Now, Johnson carries the momentum of this past weekend’s Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National triumph at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway into this year’s edition prestigious Eagle Nationals at Nebraska’s Eagle Raceway.

The Lucas Oil Sprint Cars, mixing it up with the Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest Regional forces, take to the high-banked, 1/3-mile Eagle Raceway clay oval on both Friday and Saturday night this weekend with both nights taped for later broadcast on the VERSUS Network.  Saturday’s Eagle Nationals champion collects the $6,000 winner’s share.

Shut out of National victory lane over the early portion of 2010, Eunice, LA, native Jason Johnson finally broke through in strong fashion with an Eagle Nationals triumph over a resilient Jack Dover after Danny Wood topped the preliminary night main event.

It seemingly opened the floodgates, as “The Ragin’ Cajun” followed up by winning three of four events in the Northwest a month later and rode a wave of momentum to the $60,000 championship that was strong enough that neither Brady Bacon, Shane Stewart nor any of the other top Lucas Oil Sprint Car contenders could overcome.

This time though, Johnson enters the Eagle Nationals as the only driver to post more than one Lucas Oil ASCS National win after adding an I-30 Speedway triumph on Saturday night to a March 25 win in Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals preliminary action.

Saturday’s win also put Johnson’s JJR No. 41 entry atop the owner point charts by a narrow margin over Paul Silva’s No. 57 piloted by Shane Stewart.

With Johnson busy making up ground on the driver side of the points scene, Bixby, Oklahoma native Stewart is out to 130-point edge over Albuquerque’s Johnny Herrera on the strength of a remarkable run of top-five feature finishes.  Stewart has finished among the top five in eight of nine Lucas Oil Sprint Car feature events thus far in 2011, with his only run outside the top five a ninth-place on the opening night of the Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals.

In Stewart’s wake, the battle for second is tightening up between Herrera, Jeff Swindell (Bartlett, TN), Tim Crawley (Benton, AR) and Gary Wright (Hooks, TX), with just 66 points separating those four drivers.

Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, OK) is just outside the top five, with the rest of the current top ten including Seth Bergman (Snohomish, WA), leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Aaron Reutzel (Clute, TX),  Tony Bruce, Jr. (Liberal, KS) and Zach Chappell (Talala, OK).

Just outside the top ten along with Jason Johnson are Lucas Oil Sprint Car contenders Dustin Morgan (Tulsa, OK) and Logan Forler (Eatonville, WA), who picked off a win in recent weekly action at Eagle Raceway.  Also making their way up the point charts after missing the initial four events of the season out west are Danny Wood (Norman, OK) and Wayne Johnson (Oklahoma City, OK).

The Lucas Oil Sprint Car contenders will face a number of tough contenders from the Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest Region, with Missouri’s Brian Brown leading the likes of Nebraska ace Jack Dover, North Dakota’s Lee Grosz, Ryan Roberts, Billy Alley and more.

While Jason Johnson ranks as the only driver to post multiple Lucas Oil ASCS National wins thus far in 2011, drivers with single triumphs include Stewart, Herrera, Swindell, Wright, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Tim Kaeding and Kyle Larson.  Among those looking for their first win of 2011 are Crawley, Bacon, Bergman, Reutzel, Bruce, Jr., Chappell, Morgan and Forler.

The Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest forces have logged four nights into the books, with Brian Brown posting a pair of wins.  Danny Lasoski and Lucas Oil Sprint Car National contender Seth Bergman have both posted Midwest wins as well.
