ASCS SoCal Season Opener – Take Two!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (April 18, 2011) – The newly-formed American Sprint Car Series Southern California Region was slated to kick off its inaugural season of competition a couple of weekends ago, but Mother Nature had other ideas by nixing the April 9 card with excessive rain.

Now, the ASCS Southern California Region will try it again this Saturday night atop the 3/8-mile, high-banked Giant Chevrolet Kings Speedway clay oval in Hanford, CA, with racing action set to go green at 6:30 p.m.

The inaugural slate of ASCS Southern California action includes a dozen nights of winged Sprint Car competition at four tracks including Kings Speedway, Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway, Santa Maria Speedway and Bakersfield Speedway.

Saturday’s card at Giant Chevrolet King Speedway, which will be the first step in crowning the first ASCS champion in California, marks the first of three consecutive Saturday nights of ASCS Southern Cal action with the series moving on to Thunderbowl Raceway on April 30 and then to Santa Maria Speedway on May 7.

While the American Sprint Car Series broke California ground with a pair of wingless Canyon Region events last year, the Lucas Oil ASCS National winged ranks kicked off the 2011 season with debut appearances at Thunderbowl and Kings Speedway in February.

The California shoes defended their turf quite nicely from the invading National forces in February, with Tim Kaeding tops at Tulare and then Kyle Larson winning at Kings.

Saturday’s card marks the first of five remaining scheduled ASCS Southern California events at Hanford’s Giant Chevrolet Kings Speedway.

The high-banked, 3/8-mile Giant Chevrolet Kings Speedway clay oval is located in Hanford, CA, south of SR 198 on 10th Avenue to the Fairgrounds.  For more information, contact the track at 559-584-7223.

The 2011 season marks the 20th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series, with approximately 200 nights of competition at tracks throughout the nation and into Canada.  Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of ten different Regions throughout the nation.
Additional information regarding the American Sprint Car Series is available at www.ascsracing.com.

Pelkey Plucks ASCS Canyon Win at USA!

Lonnie Wheatley, TUCSON, Ariz. (April 16, 2011) – A past Arizona state Sprint Car champion, Josh Pelkey finally captured his first career feature win under the American Sprint Car Series banner by topping Saturday night’s 30-lap Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region main event at USA Raceway.

Andrew Reinbold raced from 12th to claim the show position, with Bonneau and 18th-starter R.J. Johnson rounding out the top five after rebounding from a heat race flip to make the feature cut.

Stevie Sussex was sixth, with defending series champion Davis, Jr., Matt Rossi, Josh Castro and Thomas Ogle completing the top ten.

Ogle, Pelkey and Bonneau won heat races for Saturday night’s 26-car field, with Bob Ream, Jr., winning the “B” Main.

Lonnie Wheatley, BAYTOWN, Texas (April 16, 2011) – Michael Dupuy snared his first American Sprint Car Series Regional win in nearly three years by cracking Smiley’s Racing Products ASCS Gulf South victory lane Saturday night at Royal Purple Raceway.

Dupuy charged past Travis Rilat on the 16th round en route to the $3,000 victory in the 30-lapper at the same track at which he had claimed his most recent ASCS score in June of 2008, the 3/8-mile clay oval formerly known as Houston Raceway Park.

While Dupuy gridded the feature field fifth aboard Joe Zierolf’s Jaz-Tek No. 3x, it was pole starter Martin Edwards pacing the initial eight circuits before second row starter Rilat raced into the lead.  Dupuy followed suit around Edwards soon after and then took command for keeps just past the midway point.

Gary Wright Back in Lucas Oil ASCS Victory Lane at Little Rock!

Gary Wright captured his first Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National win since October of 2009 by racing to a $6,000 triumph in Saturday nigh'ts 35-lap main event at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway.  (Lonnie Wheatley)

Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 16, 2011) – Gary Wright ended the longest winless streak of his Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National career by racing to victory lane in Saturday night’s 35-lap main event atop the high-banked, ¼-mile I-30 Speedway clay oval.

Wright slipped under race-long leader Brad Bowden in turns one and two on the 19th circuit and went on to post his 127th career ASCS National win and first since October of 2009 in front of Jeff Swindell, with past series champions Tim Crawley, Shane Stewart and Jason Johnson rounding out the top five.

“It just feels good to win again, especially here at I-30 Speedway, this place has kind of been like a second home to me,” Wright commented after the triumph aboard his own No. 9 Maxim entry.

With the $6,000 score, Wright became the eighth different winner in as many Lucas Oil ASCS National events thus far in 2011 while also snapping a victory drought of 49 features dating back to 2009 Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals preliminary action.

“I talked with one of the top Outlaw guys last year and he said that this ASCS National deal is without a doubt the toughest racing series out there, with the format and as many good cars as there are, there’s no tougher series in the country,” Wright explained.

When informed that fellow fifty-plus member Jeff Swindell took runner up honors, Wright concluded that, “I guess us old guys put it on the young ones tonight!”

After chasing Swindell to the stripe in Friday night’s preliminary, “The Texan” redrew the front row outside starting position with 23-year-old Mississippi shoe Brad Bowden, the night’s top point earner in heat race action, drawing the pole position.

Bowden and Wright raced wheel-to-wheel through the opening lap with Bowden holding the advantage at the stripe and then wading through three early tangles, including a red flag after two laps for a Zach Chappell flip in turn two.  Chappell, who flipped in heat race action as well and then made a last-lap pass in “B” Main action to earn a transfer, was done for the night.

Back under way, Bowden led the way on the topside ahead of Wright and Sam Hafertepe, Jr., with Wright moving in to challenge as Bowden closed on the tail of the field only to have the caution fly after ten laps when Wade Oliver came to a stop in turn four.

The final 25 laps ran off in non-stop fashion, with Bowden keeping Wright at bay once again until traffic came into play.  Testing the low side of the track paid dividends for Wright, as he reeled in Bowden and drove by in turns one and two on the 19th circuit to take command.

While Wright led the way, Swindell had slipped past Hafertepe for third on the lap eleven restart and then followed Wright’s lead with a move around Bowden for second on the 22nd round.  Wright was flawless through lapped traffic though, keeping Swindell nearly a half straightaway behind.

Boxed in behind a pair of backmarkers over the final lap, Wright’s advantage diminished but proved to be enough as he took the checkered flag a half-dozen car-lengths ahead of Swindell’s Roush/Yates Ford-powered Davis Paint & Drywall No. 28 Maxim.

After starting seventh, Tim Crawley moved around Shane Stewart for fifth by the 15th lap, disposed of Hafertepe for third by the 20th round and then picked off Bowden for third by the 30th lap.  Crawley held the show position to the line to post his best series finish of the year aboard Mike Ward’s Lucas Oil/Boater Sports No. 88 GF1.

Current series point leader Stewart took over fourth in the closing circuits aboard Paul Silva’s Wesmar-powered Rockstar Energy Drink No. 57 A.R.T., with defending series champion Jason Johnson charging from 18th to round out the top five in the JJR Don Ott-powered Haynes No. 41 Maxim.

Hafertepe was sixth at the line, with Seth Bergman in seventh.  Bowden faded to eighth in the closing laps, with Tony Bruce, Jr., rallying from 24th to salvage a ninth place finish after using his second provisional of the year to start the main event after a “B” Main flip on the frontstretch.  Danny Wood completed the top ten.

Matt Covington, Logan Forler, Bowden, Bergman and Crawley topped heat race action, with Zach Pringle and Johnson winning the “B” Mains.

After starting sixth in the feature, Forler got a piece of the wall exiting turn four and came to a stop in turn one to bring out the first caution after just one lap.  A lap later, Matt Covington got pushed high exiting turn four and spun, collecting Johnny Herrera and Wade Oliver in the process.  When Chappell flipped and collected Jerrod Hull and Dustin Morgan on the restart, the work area was a busy place with Covington, Forler, Herrera and Oliver all making quick repairs to rejoin the chase.

Marshall Skinner’s night came to an early end when he flipped the Sparks No. 91 wildly off the turn two embankment on the opening lap of the night’s fourth heat race.  Like the night’s other flip victims, Skinner was uninjured.

Eric Baldaccini charged from 19th to sixth, with Travis Elliott, Gary Watson, Larry Howery and Beau Smith completing the top ten.

Smith, Elliott, Tankersley and Travis Rilat topped heat race action, with Chris Sweeney and Wes Miller winning the “B” Mains.  Rilat took the checkered flag fourth in the feature event but was disqualified and credited with a 20th place finish when he failed to report to the scales.

Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 15, 2011) – A Roush/Yates Ford-powered entry parked in Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National victory lane for the first time ever as Jeff Swindell wired the field in Friday night’s 30-lap preliminary main event atop the high-banked, ¼-mile I-30 Speedway clay oval.

Swindell gunned into the lead at the outset from the front row outside starting position and held off several challengers along the way for his second career ASCS National triumph and first since the 2002 edition of the ASCS Knoxville Nationals, becoming the seventh different winner in as many Lucas Oil Sprint Car features thus far in 2011.

“How can you dislike that Ford debut tonight, that thing purrs like a kitten and has some stomp down the straightaways,” Swindell explained of the first night with Roush/Yates Ford power under the bonnet.

With the triumph, Swindell locked himself into Saturday night’s $6,000-to-win main event at I-30 Speedway along with runner-up Shane Stewart, third-place Gary Wright and fourth-runner Sam Hafertepe, Jr.

While Swindell gridded the feature field outside the front row, it was Jerrod Hull leading the way to the green flag aboard the Donnie Cooper No. 01 mount.  Swindell raced into the lead ahead of Hull on the opening round as fifth-starter Gary Wright, back in his familiar No. 9 entry, moved up to third.

After a quick caution four laps in for a Dustin Morgan spin that collected and sent Aaron Reutzel pitside, Swindell set a quick pace that found him in traffic just ahead of Hull and Wright within a handful of laps.

“We got in traffic so quick, I tried to slow down a little just to stay out of it,” Swindell explained.

But, with Hull and Wright on his heels, Swindell maneuvered through traffic and kept his challengers at bay with Wright slipping around Hull for second on the 17th circuit, just two laps before Morgan looped it in turn two.

Under the ensuing caution, Hull surrendered the third position when his right rear tire deflated, allowing sixth-starter Shane Stewart to move up to third.  The yellow flag flew again two laps later when Jason Johnson, who had rallied from 17th, tangled with A.G. Rains in turn four while making a move for fifth.

Wright, vying for his first ASCS National win since October of 2009, pressured Swindell on the start only to see a final red flag fly just five laps shy of the checkered when Derek Hagar turned over in turn two.

When Wright slipped high exiting turn two on the restart, Swindell dashed away and Stewart charged by into second.  Swindell raced on to the stripe in the Davis Paint & Drywall No. 28 Maxim, while current Lucas Oil Sprint Car points leader Stewart took runner-up honors in Paul Silva’s Wesmar-powered Rockstar Energy Drink No. 57 A.R.T.

Wright took the show position in his No. 9 Maxim, while 13th starter Sam Hafertepe, Jr., overcame a two-position penalty in the Fisher-powered Lone Star Speedway No. 15h Maxim for jumping a mid-race restart to take the fourth and final lock-in position away from Seth Bergman in the final circuits.

Bergman rounded out the top five in the Wesmar-powered Superior Marine No. 23 Eagle, with Brad Bowden matching a career-best ASCS National finish by climbing from tenth to claim sixth.  Danny Wood was seventh, with Zach Chappell, 22nd-starter Johnny Herrera and 23rd-starter Tim Crawley completing the top ten.

Cody Gardner, Bergman, Wright, Stewart and Hull topped heat race action for Friday night’s 43-car field, with Jason Johnson and Tony Bruce, Jr., winning the 12-lap “B” Mains.  Johnson landed in “B” Main action after suffering engine woes while leading the night’s fifth heat from the pole position.  After his late feature miscue, Johnson raced back up to eleventh.

Tommy Snellgrove’s night came to an early end when he flipped wildly down the frontstretch at the start of the third heat race, while Brady Bacon turned over in turn three in the fourth heat.  Bacon missed the feature cut and used a provisional for the “A” Main as did Crawley.

The Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters National series finishes off the I-30 Speedway weekend double with Saturday night’s $6,000-to-win card, which fires off at 7:30 p.m.
